Zurich is growing. And with that, so are Zurich’s energy needs. That's because more people means more households, more electrical appliances, more electric cars, more heat pumps, etc. At the same time, the 2040 net-zero target requires our energy production to become carbon-free. To ensure that all generations have enough energy and can count on a secure, environmentally friendly and resource-saving energy supply, we are continuously driving forward the expansion of renewable energies. We produce our energy in our own power plants and those of our partners. This means security of supply and stable prices. Above all, however, it is climate-friendly.
We are continuously expanding power production from water, the sun and wind, and ensuring that there is sufficient electricity available from renewable energy sources. At the same time, we are optimising our electricity grid to ensure security of supply.
We build and operate solar power plants on public and private buildings and produce solar power for every need: whether it’s a citizen investment model for tenants, contracting for property owners or, more recently, solutions for local electricity communities (LEG).
We supply households with climate-friendly heating from our heating networks. We heat and cool with lake water from Lake Zurich (already over 4,000 households) or provide heat from waste water and waste heat from the Werdhözli. Our heating networks already supply a good third of the city of Zurich – and that proportion is set to rise to 60% by 2040.
