How are electricity prices determined?
The Swiss electricity price is closely aligned with German and French electricity prices, as well as cross-border prices. The market price on the exchange is the point where supply and demand meet, although demand is relatively stable.
How important is the point in time at which electricity is purchased?
Over time electricity prices undergo major fluctuation. You can save a lot of money by monitoring and exploiting this fluctuation. The point in time at which electricity is procured is much more important for the price than usage patterns or volumes.
Every distribution network operator is under obligation to supply energy to customers who don’t have an energy supply contract and to charge it at the tariff for alternative energy (in German). The alternative tariff can also change during the year depending on current market prices. If you have any questions, netzkundenanliegen@ewz.ch or your personal contact will be happy to help.
