At ewz, women and men have the same rights, the same duties and the same opportunities. From recruitment and career opportunities to flexible working time models, we enable the personal development of all employees, regardless of their gender identity.
As an energy service provider, ewz has been supplying all customers with electricity from 100 per cent renewable energy sources since 2015. ewz continues to drive the expansion of renewable energies in Switzerland and abroad. We have set ourselves the goal of increasing annual power generation from wind power to 2.4 TWh by 2030. We are playing a leading role in the implementation of the city of Zurich’s Solar Power Offensive. With this initiative, the municipal authorities aim to quadruple power production from PV systems to around 120 GWh by 2030.
ewz is a service division of the Department of Public Utilities and Transport of the City of Zurich. In addition to supplying electricity and thermal energy, we also operate the infrastructure for the city of Zurich’s fibre-optic network. Through our work, we make a significant contribution to the economic development of the city of Zurich and to the quality of life of its population. Between 2022 and 2024, we were able to transfer CHF 80 million in profits annually to the city of Zurich, the owner of our company. Our more than 1,200 employees benefit from a corporate culture that offers good general conditions and a wide range of development opportunities. This increases our attractiveness as an employer and promotes motivation among the workforce. We offer modern, contemporary working conditions with flexible and mobile working opportunities. In this way, we support the compatibility of work and family life. We also place great importance on having a non-discriminatory working environment. For us, a modern management culture is essential in order to promote talented individuals in a targeted manner. In this way, ewz makes a significant contribution to the well-being of its employees and to the success of the company.
The demands placed on the electricity distribution grid are constantly increasing. An increase in solar power, decentralised battery storage systems, electromobility and load management options is placing new demands on the grid. At the same time, the effects of climate change are making themselves felt in energy production. We are meeting these challenges with the modernisation of our grid infrastructure and advancing digitalisation. We also build and operate heating and cooling systems, some of which entirely dispense with fossil fuels. As an energy service provider, it is our responsibility to ensure a reliable supply of energy for hundreds of thousands of households and businesses. In the city of Zurich, we also operate the infrastructure for the fibre-optic network to which all residential and commercial properties are connected. This network provides the foundation for digital applications such as those that play a key role in the Smart City strategy, for example.
ewz will achieve net zero by 2040 and is taking specific measures to achieve this. The roadmap to net zero and a coordinated plan of action are the basis for this effort. We actively counteract climate change and its effects with our sustainable portfolio of products and services. We focus on renewable energy sources by maintaining and increasing the value of hydroelectric power and by investing in wind and solar power plants. We use energy from seawater and wastewater as well as geothermal heat and wood to supply buildings with environmentally friendly heating and cooling. In this way, we reduce the consumption of fossil energy and thus the CO₂ emissions of both our own plants and those of our customers.
