At ewz, women and men have the same rights, the same duties and the same opportunities. From recruitment and career opportunities to flexible working time models, we enable the personal development of all employees, regardless of their gender identity.
As an energy service provider, ewz has been supplying all customers with electricity that comes 100% from renewable energy sources since 2015. By expanding hydropower plants and wind farms in Switzerland and abroad, we will increase power production by an average of 100 GWh per year by 2024. We are playing a leading role in the implementation of the city of Zurich’s Solar Power Offensive. With this initiative, the municipal authorities aim to quadruple power production from PV systems to around 120 GWh by 2030.
ewz is a service division of the Department of Public Utilities and Transport of the City of Zurich. In addition to supplying electricity and thermal energy, our company is also entrusted with the operation of the fibre-optic network. Through our work, we make a significant contribution to the economic development of the city of Zurich and its people. In 2022, we were able to transfer CHF 80 million in profit to the city of Zurich as the owner of our company. Our approximately 1,200 employees benefit from a corporate culture that offers opportunities for development and good framework conditions, which has a positive impact on our attractiveness as an employer. We offer up-to-date working conditions with mobile and flexible working arrangements and support talented employees. We also have a modern management culture. As an employer, we want to enable the compatibility of family and work life. We also place great importance on having a non-discriminatory working environment.
The demands placed on the electricity distribution grid are increasing – due to climate change as well as increasing electromobility and the fluctuating supply of new renewable energies. We are meeting these challenges with the modernisation of our grid infrastructure and digitalisation. We also build and operate heating and cooling systems, some of which entirely dispense with fossil fuels. As an energy service provider, it is our responsibility to ensure a reliable supply of energy for hundreds of thousands of households and businesses. In the city of Zurich, we also operate a fibre-optic network to which all residential and commercial properties are connected. This network provides the foundation for digital applications such as those that play a role in the Smart City strategy, for example.
We support the path to a renewable energy future by maintaining and increasing the role of hydropower as well as by investing in wind and solar power plants. We use energy from seawater and wastewater as well as geothermal heat and wood to supply buildings with environmentally friendly heating and cooling. In this way, we reduce the consumption of fossil energy and thus the CO₂ emissions of both our own plants and those of our customers.
